John CAGE : " Ryoanji " - Enregistrement 'live' le 22 juin 1995 à l'Akademie der Künste, Berlin, par Robert BLACK contrebasse, Eberhard BLUM, flûte, Iven HAUSMANN trombone, Gudrun RESCHKE hautbois, John-Patrick THOMAS voix, Jan WILLIAMS percussion. (CD hat ART #6183)

L'oeuvre s'inspire du célèbre jardin zen du temple Ryoan-ji de Kyoto, constitué d'un arrangement de 15 pierres entourées de sable ratissé. La percussion représente le sable ratissé, tandis que les pierres sont évoquées par les soli instrumentaux, dont la notation est essentiellement graphique, les lignes se traduisant généralement par des glissandi. Dans cette version enregistrée en public (donc pas en studio), certains éléments du paysage sonore (avions, trains...) y sont les bienvenus, puisque Cage nous invite toujours, avant tout, à écouter " le son ".
